After a lifetime of faithful work at the gasworks, Frederick retires to a quiet existence of gardening, odd jobs and solitary evenings. He has known romance, but never found the one thing he longs for most — a love that will remain with him to the very end.
When every conventional attempt to find his perfect companion fails, Frederick approaches the problem as an engineer might: if he cannot find his one true love, perhaps he can make her.
From scraps of cloth, thread, straw-blonde hair, button eyes and blood-red lips, his Patchwork Bride slowly takes shape. What follows is a melancholy Gothic tale in which devotion, imagination and the supernatural become increasingly difficult to separate.
